Description
The KV-2 was a heavy tank designed in the Soviet Union in early 1940 and used during World War II: it took part in the catastrophic battles of Operation Barbarossa, in the defense of Moscow and in the fighting in southern Russia.
The KV-2 was born as a heavy breakthrough tank, that is, suitable for destroying fortified lines by supporting the advancing troops closely; therefore during its design the Soviet technicians focused everything on the thickness of the protections and on the firepower.
Main armament with a 152 mm caliber M1938 M-10 howitzer and featuring a 3.70 meter long barrel, it could fire high-explosive grenades at an initial velocity of 290 m / s and separately charged armor-piercing shells at 508 m / s ; the maximum range was over 12,000 meters. The portable stock on board was thirty-six rounds for the howitzer, usually equally divided between the two models, and over 3,000 cartridges for the machine guns. The crew assigned to maneuver and operate such a quantity of weapons consisted of 6 men: the commander sat in the tower together with a gunner, a loader and a machine gunner, also acting as a second handler. A second gunner was placed in the hull and the pilot was positioned to his right; the latter drove by means of the widespread clutch-brake system and the use of two directional levers to give a direction or a turn to the vehicle.
Overall, the KV-2 was a wagon just under 7 meters long and over 3.60 meters high, whose weight of about 52 tons was mainly due to the new tower and howitzer, a system that alone reached 12 tons .
